Issue: What technologies and architectures should enterprises leverage?

Summary: The value of presence beyond instant messaging is a contextual service that can be called into any application to ignite real-time interaction.

Many enterprises lack an understanding of presence and its role, partially because early generations of presence were bundled with instant messaging products.  In an age of global connectedness, presence, tied to identity and the corporate directory service, is a key part of connecting people. Presence is an online availability indicator for people that lets remote workers connect and collaborate. This research note reviews the three generations of presence and how enterprises should approach their presence strategy.
