Issue: What are the trends impacting mobile computing?

Summary: Mobilizing business is a top enterprise priority. Mobile device management is in decline as enterprise mobile management subsumes multiple siloed market segments.

The mobilizing of enterprises continues at a tremendous pace. The initial focus of IT organizations has been to secure and control the rapid influx of disparate devices, and mobile device management (MDM) has matured incredibly fast to meet this need. On its heels has been the emergence of richer enterprise app stores (EASs) and mobile application management (MAM). Still, this is only the beginning. To integrate mobility into the new enterprise architecture and exploit its transformative promise demands a broader and more comprehensive strategy that we call enterprise mobile management or EMM (see Figure 1). EMM has supplanted MDM and other approaches that attack isolated elements of mobility. This Research Note addresses the breadth of EMM that is needed to mobilize the enterprise.
