Summary: The growing use of digital signature products and services that replicate a physical signature is accelerating the demise of paper, and permanently changing the business landscape.

In business, the document has always been the proof of a business relationship. Each transaction is recorded on a piece of paper, which serves as a business record. Now, in this digital era, signing a contract is starting to become an all-electronic process. Many enterprises have begun to give their customer-facing organizations the ability to sign contracts with digital signatures. This research note evaluates the rise of digital-signature offerings and their impact on business.

Electronic signatures are not new, but a digital signature created on a PC, phone or tablet that represents the person’s real signature ushers in a new way to do business. The simplicity of new software tools, and the increasing ubiquity of digital devices that can record secure signatures, are helping to fuel this shift.
