If you’ve kept up with any of our past Aragon Cares efforts, you know we’ve done some pretty fun, amazing activities in the past. But I have to say, this month’s activity was one of my favorites so far – and I can honestly say we’ve never taken quite so many photos! We got to visit Alma Bonita Animal Rescue (ABAR) to meet, pet, and feed over 50 rescue animals. We also gave a monetary donation to this non-profit organization.
Alma Bonita Animal Rescue
Located in the foothills of Morgan Hill, California, Alma Bonita Animal Rescue’s mission is to “educate hearts and minds to support the growth of a healthy community” by “inspiring connection, love, and compassion”. Starting in 2017, the Founder of ABAR, Sheila Murphy, began searching for animals in need – whether neglected or slaughter-bound – and bringing them to the ABAR property to live a long, happy life. What started as just a few rescue animals turned into a farm full of over 50 – cows, pigs, chickens, horses, goats, alpacas… you name it!
ABAR is much more than just a place to pet adorable animals. Sheila uses her farm to provide programs that “support teaching and learning about animal ownership, responsibility, and compassion, as well as supporting the next generation of leaders.” Not only does she rescue vulnerable animals, but also uses them to teach and support humans. She even spoke about her hopes to use her sanctuary to offer support to people with mental health struggles – not only is ABAR a safe space for animals, but for people, too.
Our Experience
Our hearts were instantly stolen the second we stepped out of the car and onto the ABAR property – first, by a sweet 30-year-old horse named Star, who greeted us at the gates. From there, Sheila was kind enough to walk us through each part of the farm to introduce us to the different animals and tell us some of the stories of how they were rescued. It is easy to see how well-cared for and loved these animals are, and great to know that they were brought to ABAR to heal and live their best lives.
One of the animals that stood out to me was a 1.5-year-old cow named Norman – I can’t say I’ve ever gotten to pet a cow before – but with Norman, it was hard to step away!

Secondly, you can make a donation to ABAR online! 100% of donations go to the animals in the form of supplies, feed, veterinary care, and emergency rescues. ABAR is a non-profit organization and relies on the generosity of donations.
