iPhone 5 – Time to Give up your Blackberry

By Jim Lundy

Apple announced the iPhone 5 today and we live tweeted the event. We will be covering the updates to Apple’s Ecosystem, primarily iOS 6 in some separate First Cuts. Our take on the announcement today is that the iPhone 5 is the business phone to replace all the old Blackberrys, as well as aging iPhones and other devices.

The business proposition for the iPhone 5 is  for pretty simple:

-Major upgrade to the Battery, Apple claims 8 Hour talk time on 3G or LTE

– 2X Faster A6 Processor, which, will enable applications to do more. Image processing is 40% faster. Look for more here as apps catch-up.

LTE Connectivity globally, which means lightening fast speeds

– Improvements to Siri, which will mean less typing and more talking to compose and listen to messages.

Passbook, a new app, that will make it so much easier to keep your boarding passes and tickets easily available on your phone.

Of course there is much more than that to the iPhone 5. However, for business users, speed and battery life are critical. Given all the apps that run on an iPhone – 700,000 and counting, if there was ever a time to switch from older devices like a Blackberry, Apple just made it a no brainer.

While some are still learning to use Siri on the iPhone 4S, we expect there is much more to come with Siri in iOS 6. Apple doesn’t always communicate all of its capabilities during its announcements. It may take weeks for people to actually discover all the tweaks to the chip sets in the iPhone 5. Expect a few surprises.

Finally, for those that use the iPhone to capture business documents (something I use quite a bit), there is better support for image capture in different lighting situations with the iPhone 5.

So, all in all, the iPhone 5 will be one of the best business phones available today. Expect record demand and record sales. If there was any doubt about turning in your old Blackberry, that decision just got easy with the announcement of the iPhone 5. Of course, there are lots of other choices out there. Apple has raised the bar and others will have to react.
