Apple and Google May Partner for iPhone AI

News has spread that Apple is in discussions with Google to integrate the search giant’s AI models into iPhones for consumer use.

This blog discusses the possible partnership and what it may mean for the generative AI market.

An Apple-Google Partnership for AI?

The idea of Apple partnering with Google for AI might come as a surprise to some, given their competition over the mobile market. However, it may a shrewd decision that could benefit the long-term plans of both organizations. Apple has struggled to deliver high-quality text-driven AI experiences.

Despite its impressive integration of neural networks for photo enhancement and image recognition, features like Apple’s Siri are notably lagging behind the kind of user experience delivered by assistants like ChatGPT voice.

Google, on the other hand, has struggled to secure leadership in a market that it has a strong natural advantage in. Google’s models have struggled to dethrone OpenAI’s leading edge, and its major AI releases have been accompanied with negative PR. Both these issues have hampered adoption. If Google were able to expand to a large user-base through partnerships, such as iPhone-owners, it could help them achieve better market penetration.

Apple’s Role to Play in the AI Race

Recently, Apple shuttered its self-driving program, announcing that it would be investing heavily in generative AI. It may seem that Apple has been a bit quiet during the generative AI race—while Google, Microsoft, and Meta all compete to deliver leading models, Apple has not fundamentally changed its approach to AI, which is a major driver of many features across its mobile devices, especially photography and cameras.

The possibility of a partnership with Google may shed light on why Apple has not been delivering competitive AI models to the market the way other tech giants have. Perhaps Apple’s play is to position itself more as a high-quality product provider, which relies on state-of-the art commodity models to deliver the best features. This approach would save Apple the cost and struggle of competing the way organizations like Google have, but might be perceived by some as bowing out of the critical race.

Bottom Line

It remains to be seen whether the Apple-Google AI partnership will come to fruition, but if it does, it suggests that Apple aims to leverage AI more as a means of improving its core product functionality than compete as a core AI model provider.
