GDPR Compliance and Content – Don’t Wait

by Jim Lundy

The GDPR deadline of May 25th, 2018 is looming and Aragon estimates that only 55% of enterprises will be ready and fully compliant by the deadline.

We recently published a research note about content and GDPR, and this blog will provide highlights from that note.

Intelligent Content Analytics Will Replace Search

Enterprises need the ability to locate data—involving people or enterprises that reside in Europe—within documents; this is the primary function of GDPR. Today, search functions often do not work because not all documents are indexed and search is not set up to search across repositories.

Aragon feels that enterprises will need to invest in next-generation Intelligent Content Analytics (ICA) to assist the understanding (and locating) of content tied to GDPR. Aragon’s note on GDPR and our overview of ICAP is helping prepare our clients for the deadline.

Records Management Becomes Strategic

While maintaining business records isn’t a new expectation, making those records GDPR-compliant isn’t optional. This makes records management, part of an ECM platform offering, more strategic. Our view of ECM is different from that of Gartner and Forrester, as reflected by our new ECM architecture that was recently published in our 2018 Aragon Research Globe for ECM.

Two key points underscore GDPR:

1) Enterprises need to leverage existing ECM providers’ records management capabilities.

or

2) Enterprises should deploy a new ECM offering that leverages federated records management and focuses on GDPR compliance.

Upgrade Your Content Strategy to Become GDPR-Ready

The big challenge is understanding what content (and data within the content) poses a risk for GDPR non-compliance. You need to perform a company audit and get every business unit GDPR-ready.

Aragon has helped many firms with their content strategies over the years. If you are struggling with this, you may schedule a free call with me. Today, we recorded a presentation that offers a deep dive into GDPR. Sign up for the recording here.
