Intern Update: Videos and Getting to Know Our Drone, AR1

By Jack Buehler

It’s been pretty busy here for the last few weeks. After the first week of onboarding, Jim had us jump straight to work. I started working on some of the Hot Vendor reports and Evan started to work on deliverables and graphics for our Twitter handle. We were also introduced to the company drone, AR1.

It’s pretty difficult to control, but it’s pretty fun to fly. James took us outside and taught us how to use it after I downloaded the app. The drone is surprisingly difficult to control. It was plenty of fun though, and I have been ordered to become Aragon’s new drone expert. No promises though.

Creating Videos

We also worked videos, with Evan taking the lead. The first few were for the introduction blog here, but Evan has also been working on promotional videos for the IT/DEV Connections event in Vegas. Its been quite the experience, though. I’d never worked with video before, and I’m pretty impressed with what got done.

So far, it hasn’t been too difficult to make videos—they just require a lot more detail than I thought. I found myself getting pulled back to a transition because it didn’t sync up quite right, or the sound was a little off, but we got it right in the end.

Our Drone, AR1

About a month ago, we had the offsite, where all the Aragon employees come work at HQ.

Jim, David Smith, and I went up to Anderson Lake to talk about the research agenda and fly the drone, but it was more windy than anticipated. The Aragon drone doesn’t weigh a lot and we learned it doesn’t do so well in high winds. I ended up scrambling down the inside of the dam twice to save the drone because it had flown over the edge.

Evan continues to work on videos. He’s made a few more since the one about IT/Dev Connections. He worked on a video about Jim Sinur for IT/Dev Connections, and he has also been working on the Aragon Research e-books, doing some graphics and design work.

The first of those should be released shortly, so look for it soon!

I’ve been working on a project for a while now, and Jim is helping me through the process. We are working on a small series dealing with predictive technology. I’ve been working on the Predictive Vendor Index, but we are also working on a machine learning platforms as a service (MLPaaS) piece, and there will also be an interactive piece on predictive technology.

If your enterprise doesn’t use predictive, I would seriously consider looking at them; it’s pretty cool technology and has business-changing potential, especially for enterprises who collect tons of data.
