Low-Code/No-Code Is a Feature Not a Product

Low-Code/No-Code Is a Feature Not a Product

I just finished the Aragon Research Globe for Transformation as a Platform (tPaaS), 2023 last week. I am so glad to get to release it. I think it will be very important for organizations seeking to do more than just remediation, optimization and automation, and really support full business transformation.

Releasing this globe got me thinking about some of the capabilities in iPaaS (integration platform as a service) and tPaaS that at one time were stand along services or products, but now are features within these broader platforms.

Messaging, EDI and RPA

Do you remember when messaging and EDI services were standalone products?

In the early 1990’s, IBM messaging was the dominant messaging technology, which later became a core part of the company’s WebSphere suite of integration middleware.

Same with electronic data interchange (EDI). At one time there were a host of EDI service providers, now EDI is just a feature in most of the development and integration platforms.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) was garnering a lot of attention just a few years ago. But, as companies like Microsoft began to integrate RPA into their products, the market for standalone RPA services declined dramatically.

Now…Low-Code/No-Code Development

Now, we are seeing low-code and increasingly no-code become standard features in business applications, business process automation services and platforms.

By EOY 2024, low-code/no-code development capabilities will become a standard feature of business applications, cloud platforms, business process management services and integration platforms.

Bottom Line

What does this mean for you? It means that there will be a big incentive to pick your development capabilities based on your application, integration, and cloud platforms.

So, what’s next?

You should always expect that what is hot today – like AI content generation – will become a feature in the future. The major sign that this is happening is when major providers start including the capabilities in their offering.

You just need to make sure you’re not standing when the music stops.
