Last week, the United States Executive Branch released a 64-page executive order titled “Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.”
At first blush, the executive order might be read as simply a government document directing government agencies to take specific operational actions to take on specific management and governance action.
More Than Regulation
However, with a deeper look, it’s clear that this executive order is not just about regulation. This directive creates a framework for an industry-wide discourse on the principles, policies, guidance, and administration of AI systems.
To have a broad impact on the use and governance of AI, this framework order must impact not only within government agencies but across all organizations and individuals using, managing or creating AI systems.
