Is Every Platform an AI Platform?

Is Every Platform an AI Platform?

By Betsy Burton

Is Every Platform an AI Platform?

This is an excellent question, and the answer is no. But, let me elaborate.

For the past six months, Jim Lundy and I have delved into extensive research on an emerging market which we refer to as the AI Platform Market.

What is the AI Platform Market?

The AI Platform Market encompasses vendors that provide platform technologies and/or services specifically focused on integrating, coordinating, and delivering AI services to enable organizations to define and develop AI-enabled solutions.

What sets these intelligent platforms apart is their design to offer foundational AI services.

These services empower developers, business users, and technology providers to add and share content within the environment, fostering the creation of AI-enabled solutions.

Platforms Seemingly Everywhere

I’ve previously highlighted the proliferation of platforms across nearly every market. Platform architecture has become the default choice for most development environments.

Essentially, developing applications, tools, services, and infrastructure on a platform that can be extended by internal development teams, partners, and sometimes customers.

However, the landscape becomes slightly confusing when many existing platforms start incorporating AI services. For instance, an iPaaS platform may support some AI capabilities like no-code or copilot aided development tools.

A sales enablement platform may provide AI capabilities such as prescriptive analytics or sales guidance.

While these platforms may offer some AI capabilities, they lack a specific focus on helping users develop additional or new AI services.

What Differentiates AI Platforms?

These platforms, unlike other platforms, fully supports AI technologies and services such as LLMs, SLM, knowledge graphs, models, computer vision, deep learning, bots/agents, vector databases, and development tools.

In fact, one of the most potent roles of AI platforms is integrating diverse platforms using AI technologies. Additionally, many technology providers are starting to develop AI platforms to meet their own development needs.

The AI Platform Market

We observe that the AI platform market is nascent but rapidly emerging as providers race to develop their AI capabilities and offer a breadth of services to customers.

We predict that through 2027, the majority of large organizations will support at least 3-5 different AI platforms (0.8 probability).

Bottom Line

At the end of the day, it is important to realize that…..

Every Platform will Have Some AI; But not all Platforms will be AI Platforms

If you’re an end-user organization, you’ll likely utilize multiple AI platforms, alongside platforms that are AI-enabled but not AI platforms.

It’s essential to discern the capabilities your platforms offer and define an architecture that leverages them effectively.

If you’re a technology provider, chances are you’ll integrate into major AI platforms provided by infrastructure giants like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, as well as database and application providers like Oracle, Salesforce, and Meta.

You may also develop your AI solutions for specific applications.

It’s crucial to articulate a market strategy for your platforms and comprehend the capabilities required to compete effectively in this market, weighing the costs and benefits.

For further insights into this topic, I encourage you to attend our webinar on February 22nd. Jim and I will delve into the emergence and evolution of this market.

How are you going to develop AI solutions? How are you going to integrate diverse AI technologies? The answer is…with AI platforms.

An AI platform coordinates AI services to enable organizations to define and develop AI solutions. What makes them specific and differentiated is that it supports AI technologies and services, such as LLM, SLM, knowledge graphs, computer vision, deep learning, bots/agents, vector database, development tools, etc.
