What is multi-cloud?
The multi-cloud, put simply, is the deployment of workloads to two or more public clouds. For the greatest benefit, they would share common management tools and provide the ability to move easily between the two clouds.
What are some of the benefits and challenges of multi-cloud?
Some benefits of the multi-cloud that Craig covered included:
- Reduced cost
- Improved service levels
- Improve availability
- Improve security
- Easier recovery from a Cloud Service Providers (CSP) outage
- Easier recovery from a security issue
- Ability to move workloads between CSPs
However, some challenges Craig mentioned are:
- Increased complexity
- Increased probability of a single security incident
- Increased probability of a single service outage
- Increased opportunities for misconfigurations
- Manage and monitor a singular pane of glass
- Periodic reassessment of workload placement
What should I consider when moving to multi-cloud?
Craig advised that enterprises need to assess the requirements and characteristics of the workloads in their organization. Those reports should include resource requirements, in-app dependencies, regulatory requirements, and security.
The same thing also needs to be done to their CSP. You need to access what service they excel in and where it may be lagging. To determine that you should access best-of-breed services, multi-cloud support, management tools, and security. You should also see how committed each CSP is to multi-cloud support. Once that is complete you can move onto mapping out your work clouds.
The main 5 points of advice Craig shared are:
- Leverage SaaS applications whenever possible
- Fully understand the footprints of your workloads
- Select the best cloud platform for each workload
- Use containers or kubernetes wherever possible
- Take ownership of your cloud security
