More than 12 years ago, the battle cry was that users were out of control. Today, it appears that business units want to control more of their tech destiny. This blog discusses the rise of Departmental Tech Stacks and why it isn’t a bad thing.

It is very clear that, in many enterprises, business unit general managers are pushing their teams to leverage technology more than in the past. Technology has become a way to get ahead of the competition, which means business managers are becoming tech savvy. They are not waiting for permission to make decisions on the technology they need to run their business units.

Chief Digital Officers Making a Difference

Obviously, in many enterprises, IT continues to work closely with business units to assist them with their technology needs. Tech can get complicated quickly. Chief Digital Officers are becoming very involved to make sure business unit general manager’s needs are being met.

Sales and Marketing: The Race to Optimized Tech Stacks

One thing is clear, after fifteen years of SaaS applications, business managers are smart and savvy. They are not waiting for permission to optimize their tech stack. IT and procurement may help with major contracts. But building out the stack to optimize sales enablement, marketing automation, and web e-commerce, is as much art as it is science. 

The New Rise of Departmental Tech Stacks

Tech stacks that help deliver results can be compared to what it takes to build a winning race car. There are many common components, but it is about the total package that will deliver the required business outcomes. Lots of testing is needed to get the right formula – the right stack.

Many clients we have spoken with mention this challenge often and it requires constant attention. However, technology as a weapon to drive the business is really the new battle cry. How enterprises get there is not easy. Many firms count on Aragon to assist them with this dilemma.

Bottom Line

Business Leaders are now making many of the decisions around their technology investments. The race to a departmental tech stack is here and with it comes new opportunities as well as risks. We see more departments taking control of their technology destiny and turning to Aragon for help. There is no stopping this trend. Today, business leaders are much more savvy on technology than they were just 3 years ago.
