Wearable computers are a fast-growing category of devices that a person can attach to their body or clothing. Many early models are peripherals for smartphones, but a growing number are standalone devices comparable in power to early smartphones.

The Apple Watch, which shipped in Q2 2015, joined Fitbit as one of the mass-produced wearables and helped to legitimize the category. In addition to wearable devices, digital clothing also became a category in 2015.

Wearables have many potential uses, and much of the innovation in this area will focus on the apps that run on these devices. Candidates for wearables include doctors, soldiers, truck drivers, technicians, and on-the-go knowledge workers.
