Issue: What are the key trends in Collaboration?
Summary: The value of Presence is that when tied to identity, it becomes a contextual service from which you can initiate real-time collaborative interactions.
For those of us who have been in Collaboration or Unified
Communication and Collaboration (UCC) circles for any
period of time, we are very familiar with the concept of
Presence. Many of us think of Presence as the IM buddy list
or UCC client contact list that shows who is on or offline. In a
nutshell, basic Presence identifies which knowledge workers
are online and available for interaction on a PC or other device
(see Note 1). Generally, Presence is used before a real-time
interaction, such as a text chat, voice call or video call. In this
research note, we will discuss developing a strategy for
Presence in order to enable contextual collaboration.
