OpenAI Delivers on Plugins—Is ChatGPT The New Generative Content Platform?
Today, OpenAI announced the initial support of ChatGPT plugins, continuing to expand the functionality and extensibility of ChatGPT Plus. OpenAI will be gradually rolling out access to users and plugin developers that have registered on a waitlist and will be rolling out to the larger user community over time after better understanding real-world use cases and successfully meeting quality, impact, safety and alignment goals.

Initial Plugins provided by OpenAI
OpenAI is providing two of its own plugins, a web browsing plugin and a code interpreter plugin.
The web browsing plugin enables ChatGPT to access information on the internet. This supplements the primary training corpus that is limited to information through September 2021 with information currently available on the web.
The code interpreter plugin can be used for a variety of use cases, including solving mathematical problems, performing analytics, visualization of data sources, and more.

Open-sourcing of ChatGPT Retrieval Plugin
In addition to the two initial plugins described above, OpenAI has open-sourced its retrieval plugin. This plugin enables ChatGPT to access personal or an organization’s information sources to augment the information included in the model’s core training corpus.
What About Third-party plugins?
Plugins have already been created for integrating with many popular applications. Plugins are available for Expedia, FiscalNote, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna Shopping, Milo Family AI, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Speak, Wolfram, and Zapier. These make it easy to conversationally interact with ChatGPT to make reservations, order goods, make and book travel plans, and more.
The New Generative Content Platform?
The support for ChatGPT plugins is the perfect complement for the recently announced ChatGPT API support. These capabilities provide integration between ChatGPT and any application regardless of whether the initial requests are initiated from ChatGPT or the application. With these new features, ChatGPT is rapidly becoming the platform that applications are using for conversational interfaces.
Bottom Line
This is a potential game changer for an already addictive application. As impressive as ChatGPT is, providing access to external sources, applications, and additional functionality will enable ChatGPT to evolve into a real digital assistant. This is getting tantalizing close to the pinnacle of AI where machines and humans talk to each other and then carry out tasks all through natural conversations.
