AI System Finds New Undiscovered Asteroids
Artificial intelligence has been credited with discovering more than 27,000 asteroids in old photographs that were previously overlooked. In this blog, we discuss the news and the emerging potential of generative AI in the sciences.
AI and Asteroids
Recently, scientists from the Asteroid Institute trained a new AI system called THOR to recognize asteroids in images. When presented with 400,000 images from the institute’s archive the algorithm was able to discover 27,000 asteroids that went previously unidentified by researchers.
The detection of asteroid locations in space is vital to the protection of the Earth from asteroids. If astronomers do not know the location of asteroids in outer space, they will be powerless to warn about potential impacts. Consequently, THOR’s discovery has the potential to save lives. It also points to the overall potential that AI has to automate and empower scientific research.
Generative AI and Scientific Discovery
Generative AI presents novel possibilities when it comes to the traditional workflows of research scientists and laboratories. The ultimate dream would be a highly intelligent research assistant, which could be autonomously tasked to assist researchers with their ongoing work. While current systems are a far cry from this reality, they still have the potential to radically change the way scientific work gets done.
Asteroids aren’t the only things being discovered by AI systems. Recently, a system from Google managed to discover numerous new materials. Similar applications are being pursued in chemistry, especially in the area of drug discovery. Generative AI has the power to quickly generate and review data like protein structures, giving it the power to autonomously discover alongside human researchers.
Bottom Line
The story of THOR’s ability to identify asteroids that went undiscovered by professional researchers suggests there may be a bright future ahead at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the sciences.
