Walmart Brings Shopping to ChatGPT Through New OpenAI Partnership
Walmart is taking a major step toward conversational commerce, announcing a deal with OpenAI that will let shoppers make purchases directly through ChatGPT.
Redefining the Online Shopping Experience
The partnership marks a shift from traditional e-commerce search toward AI-driven discovery. Instead of typing keywords into a search bar, customers will soon be able to ask ChatGPT for product suggestions or gift ideas—and buy items instantly through Walmart. The integration builds on OpenAI’s new Instant Checkout feature, which streamlines single-item purchases within the chat experience.
For Walmart, this move aligns with its ongoing push to make online shopping more intuitive and personalized. The retailer described the upcoming experience as “multi-media, personalized, and contextual,” signaling an evolution toward richer, more conversational retail interactions.
Monetizing Conversational Commerce
OpenAI plans to charge partners transaction fees for purchases made through ChatGPT, introducing a new revenue stream as it expands beyond subscriptions and APIs. While Walmart hasn’t disclosed financial details, the collaboration highlights how large retailers are positioning themselves within emerging AI ecosystems. Walmart’s own in-app assistant, Sparky, already demonstrates how the company is testing AI across multiple channels.
