Summary

Public cloud spending continues to accelerate with organizations embracing SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, and almost all "as-a-Service” new offerings as they become available. Depending upon the type of workloads that make up your organization’s IT services, it may make sense to embrace a hybrid cloud as an alternative to following the trend to shift all your workloads to a public cloud.

The public cloud is clearly here to stay as more and more organizations are running applications and conducting core business in the cloud. Most organizations are leveraging SaaS strategies for running office products like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and CRM solutions like Salesforce as key parts of their business IT strategy. Organizations with software development teams are increasing their productivity by taking advantage of the ease of deployment and elasticity that IaaS and PaaS public clouds offer. Despite these major trends, not all IT services are appropriate to move to the public cloud. But what should you do with them?

Introduction

Many new organizations developing their IT strategies from scratch are naturally drawn to public clouds by the lure of pay-as-you-go operating costs, seemingly limitless elasticity, significantly less up-front capital costs, reduced operational complexity, and most importantly, levels of security that are exceedingly difficult to achieve in most self-managed on-premise deployments. If designed properly, building out greenfield workloads in a public cloud can provide highly efficient and secure IT services for many organizations that will minimize both operational expenses and complexity and reduce vulnerabilities.

Mature, established organizations likely have already migrated a number of IT services to the public cloud yet still have an assortment of workloads that do not easily transfer to the public cloud. These workloads will typically remain in an organization’s self-managed data centers until they can be functionally replaced by a SaaS offering or a more cloud friendly product offering.
