Learning Content – Shifting to Advanced Simulations and Gaming
By Jim Lundy
I gave a talk recently to some major enterprises who do Learning Content development. The discussion was around the shift from static learning content to an evolution of more advanced simulations and eventually gaming.
Learning Simulations – Easier and Cheaper to develop
The discussion involved the state of simulations and most agreed that single user simulations are becoming less expensive. The shift to multi-user environments will lead us to the intersection of learning and gaming, where gaming engines (which there are more than a few) and virtual environments will be harnessed to build immersive training scenarios in five years that today seem like a dream.
Learning, Simulation and Gaming Agenda
Here at Aragon Research, we cover Learning as part of our Knowledge Topic and we’ve published two Research notes on this topic:
Simulations and Gaming can give your Enterprise an Edge Link
Toolkit: Getting Started with Advanced Simulations: Seven Steps to Success Link
Learning Content, Simulation and Gaming Engine Providers
In the Getting Started with Advanced Simulations toolkit, we discuss best practices in getting started. We also list a number of vendors in the Appendix that span from Accenture, Adobe, Allen Communications, IBM Global Services, Kenexa (Outstart), Skillsoft, SumTotal, Saba and others. Gaming engine vendors include Crytek GmbH, Delta3d and Havok.
One thing is clear, the enterprises that leverage simulations today will use gaming tomorrow. Where are you in this continuum? Contact us for a free discussion on your Learning Content strategy.
