Aragon Cares January 2023: Love Letters for Literacy
Aragon Cares is Aragon Research’s monthly activity focused on giving back to our local and surrounding communities.
For January, the Aragon Research team began 2023 by making literacy kits for Love Letters for Literacy!
About Love Letters for Literacy
Love Letters for Literacy is on the mission to help families in need with handmade literacy packets to help preschoolers learn the alphabet – a fundamental skill for reading and writing in school.
The organization was founded by Jordan Grabrelle when she was ten years old after learning some kids enter kindergarten without knowing more than two letters of the alphabet.
She was motivated by her experience playing with foam alphabets to learn her ABCs, so she thought of a cost-effective solution: handmade flashcards!
Grabrelle’s experience set the goal for Love Letters for Literacy: to ensure all children are on the same playing field since many lower-income children tend to come into kindergarten with less knowledge of the alphabet than their peers.
In addition to the handmade alphabet flashcards, families and parents receive fun game ideas to play with the flashcards. This helps to get the whole family involved!
How We Got Involved
The Aragon Research team completed six sets of literacy kits!
First, we gathered the supplies:
- Large blank index cards
- Colorful markers and pens
- Paper for our letters
- Printouts of the games to play with the flashcards
- Zip lock bags to keep it all together!
With the supplies ready, each Aragon team member got their set of 27 blank index cards and began decorating them! Some of us broke into teams of two to divide and conquer.

The cards came out bright and colorful. The design of the cards varied from adding pictures, words, and even visual instructions on how to write each letter.

After the kits were completed, we sent the cards to Reading Partners in Oakland to be used by children and their families!
