Apple Poised to Enter the AI Era with Siri and iOS 18
Apple, historically cautious in adopting emerging technologies, appears ready to fully embrace artificial intelligence (AI) with significant enhancements to Siri and the upcoming iOS 18. This shift could redefine how users interact with their Apple devices and elevate Siri from a voice-activated feature to a true personal assistant.
Siri: The AI-Powered Personal Assistant
The new Siri aims to seamlessly integrate with Apple’s ecosystem, initially focusing on tasks within Apple apps. Imagine Siri effortlessly opening documents, drafting and sending emails, or summarizing a lengthy article with a simple voice command. While most AI processing is expected to occur on-device, complex tasks may be offloaded to Apple’s cloud data centers for faster, more efficient processing. In those Apple Data Centers, they will leverage the power of M2 and M4 chips – vs having to rely on NVidia GPUs as others do.
iOS 18: AI-Enhanced Features
iOS 18 is set to usher in a wave of AI-powered features. Siri will become more intelligent, understanding complex queries and responding with spoken answers. It will gain a greater awareness of your contacts, appointments, and locations, streamlining daily interactions. One of the most anticipated features is Siri’s ability to understand and execute multiple commands at once – for example, “Find this photo, crop it, and send it to these people.”
Gemini vs. OpenAI vs Apple: The LLM Question
As Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) approaches, the source of Apple’s underlying Large Language Model (LLM) remains a mystery. Will it be Google, OpenAI, or a combination? Google currently pays Apple a significant sum to maintain Google Search as the default on iOS devices so Google may have an inside angle due to all their previous dealings. However, Apple’s in-house development of their own proprietary LLM, suggests they may be moving towards a more independent AI strategy.
Apple Mobile and MacBook Devices are Already AI PCs
While there was much hype at Microsoft Build about their new ARM based AI PCs and Surface devices, we’d like to note that one of the reasons that LLMs and AI will run so well on Apple devices is because they already have GPU processors on their ARM based System on a Chip M1, M2, M3 and M4 Processors.
This is a significant design advantage – and it actually should raise questions in the enterprise relative to what the device strategy will be going forward – since so many PCs will now be considered legacy and ‘Not AI Ready”
Bottom Line
Apple’s entry into the AI era holds immense potential. With Siri becoming a true personal assistant and iOS 18 offering advanced AI features, Apple devices are poised to become even more intuitive and helpful. While many details are yet to be confirmed, the WWDC starting on June 10th promises to be a pivotal event in Apple’s AI journey, potentially making AI mainstream in a way unique to Apple.
