Google IO Impressions: Is Generative AI Business Transformative?
I attended the keynote and a number of sessions at Google’s Google IO event this week. There were a number of major generative AI announcements, including enhancements to its PaLM API and Bard LLM. In addition, the company demonstrated Duet AI, an generative AI Google Documents, Search, Slides, Gmail and Scheduling, as well as major AI enhancements to Search.
This announcement got me thinking about the impact of Google’s, as well as Microsoft’s, generative AI services will have on business transformation.
Is Generative AI Transformative?
There is no doubt generative AI is transformative technology.
It refers to a new suite of tools that can generate a wide variety of content and digital assets. By leveraging state of the art AI, these tools can support the enterprise by producing valuable material ranging from software code to images, slides, video, and text.
While it is still evolving, by using AI and large languages models, organizations can engage with their customers in dramatically new ways.
Generative AI and Business Transformation
However, generative AI will not automatically transform your business. As I have discussed many times, business transformation is about business and technology leaders working together to determine the future state of the business and about defining new business strategy and models.
Yes, it can be an impetus for organizations to initiate a business transformation effort. It can also enable critical new business transformation models, products, and services. However, it will not automatically transform your business.
Risks of Generative AI and Business Transformation
In fact, if organizations are not careful and planning for the growth and adoption of generative AI, it could become a challenge.
Users will adopt AI as it continues to evolve. It can make their work easier and more exciting. It also will become an integral part of their personal consumer life and work life.
Organizations must plan for the widespread interest and adoption of this technology. And this planning must include when to use it and when not to use it given the business strategy.
Business and technology leaders must lead the use of generative AI, not be led by the use of it.
Bottom Line
AI is clearly a transformational technology. And it can be a powerful technology to inspire and fuel business transformation. However, by itself it will not transform your business. Your business and technology leaders must determine your business transformation strategy.
Every business and technology leader must start learning about generative AI now. Go spend some time using Chat GPT, Microsoft’s Bing, and Google Bard. There are many tutorials and in-depth learning sessions online.
Generative AI is one of those technologies business and technology leaders must lead, not just follow.
