Issues: What are the technologies and architectures that make up a mobile ecosystem?
Who are the vendors that are battling to lead the mobile computing revolution?
Summary: RIM’s future depends on expanding its mobile management beyond BlackBerry devices. New architectures have created a more complex roadmap for its BES management product.
Research In Motion (RIM) continues to face significant market, financial and product challenges. In addition to revitalizing its OS and device products, RIM is shifting its mobile management strategy to address new enterprise demands for multi-vendor support. These shifts mean substantial changes to its MDM products, which have created confusion and uncertainty about the future of BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).
Mobile device management, along with secure mobile email, has been core to RIM’s success. RIM was an MDM pioneer with BES, and other MDM providers have built off its capabilities to become successful in today’s multi-OS market. However, the erosion of RIM’s mobile device dominance with BlackBerry, and the end of the BlackBerry-only environment in the enterprise, have driven major changes in RIM’s BES roadmap.
