We have entered the Tablet Era, and tablet acceptance and use continues at an unprecedented pace. The market shift of the last two years caught many providers unprepared. Even leaders and strong players with seemingly solid competitive positions have found themselves either viewing this transformation from the outside or scrambling to fill voids in their product strategies. Viewed as a fad when they were introduced in 2010, tablets are now working in ways that laptop computers can’t. This forecast provides a three-year look at where they are going (see Note 1).
Tablets, along with smartphones and the mobile ecosystem that surrounds them, are changing the face of enterprise computing. For many enterprises, they offer the possibilities of increased user productivity, lower cost and less IT overhead to manage them. Tablets are mainstream for growing segments of consumers and are penetrating deeper into enterprises, with many use cases just beginning to become reality. For providers, the race has just started and what is surprising is how far industry titans were caught off guard.
