LLM Wars: Google’s New Gemini LLM Replaces Google Bard
The LLM Wars are here. Google Bard is no longer.
This week, Google announced that the new name for Google Bard is now Gemini and this is based on the Gemini LLM that was launched last year.
Part of the reason for the fanfare is Google Gemini Ultra which is offering new levels of automation and intelligence. This blog analyzes this move by Google.
Google Bard is Dead Long, Live Google Gemini
One could say that Google Bard was not ready for prime time and that is part of the reason that they’re dumping the name. The other reason is with a much higher performance of Google Gemini it made sense to get rid of any negative connotations that Google Bard had.
Analysis of Google’s Move
In Generative AI, while Google was first with the PaLM LLM, it has been a race with OpenAI – who out-marketed them and some may argue beat them with GPT 3.5. Google had no choice but to catch up fast and with Gemini, we think they did. The issue is now getting people to use it – vs ChatGPT. The new Mobile App from Google may help. So will aggressive marketing.
Google Gemini vs. Chat GPT
Google is touting its new Gemini LLM as having the ability to deal with both text documents and images more seamlessly. Google is also claiming that it can do much better at complex tasks as compared to Chat GPT 3.5. However, with GPT 4.0, it is looking like it is closer to a tie.
There are free versions of Google Gemini– but as with OpenAI and Microsoft – to get the best capabilities with Google, OpenAI, or Microsoft – you need a paid subscription – at around $20.00 per month. That gets you Google One. For people that have a Google One basic account (for storage) at 9.99 a month to get Gemini, you need to upgrade to 19.99 per month.
The Race for Conversational Search – Google vs Microsoft
In a way, the free versions of Google Gemini and Microsoft Bing which is now Microsoft Copilot represent a new race and help people search and interact with web-based information. Google has always LED in search but Microsoft certainly helped its game when it made the huge investment in open AI.
Bottom Line
Google made a strong move to rename Google Bard and now it has to engage with end users and with developers to gain more usage of Google Gemini. The good news is that, just as with Microsoft, Google has a secure trust layer for enterprises to protect their data and now their knowledge. This LLM War will be a fast-paced race – Aragon has you covered.
