Oracle’s CloudWorld 2024 Announcements
Oracle’s CloudWorld 2024 Announcements
This week at Oracle CloudWorld 2024, Oracle unveiled a series of enhancements to its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) distributed cloud, aiming to strengthen its offering in the AI platform and cloud markets.
Oracle’s Announcements
Oracle DBMS on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud: While Oracle databases were already accessible on these platforms, this announcement makes support for other cloud services “officially supported” and more natively integrated, and globally accessible.
Enhancements to OCI Dedicated Region: OCI Dedicated Region is Oracle’s physically isolated managed cloud region. It supports data and processing privacy, security, and lower latency. While OCI Dedicated Region has been used by customers since 2020, the lead time for setting it up could be months.
Oracle’s announcement this week was the release of enhancements to speed up the deployment by:
- Utilizing pre-configured hardware racks
- Simplifying and standardizing networking setup
- Streamlining the process of provisioning and configuring OCI services.
Deployment of OCI Dedicated Region will still be impacted by requirements for power, cooling, networking, and space, configuration services, and logistics.
OCI Supercluster: Oracle plans to release OCI Supercluster, created with up to 131,072 NVIDIA GPUs, in 2025.
OCI Roving Edge Partnership: Oracle is actively expanding its partnerships and capabilities with Klas Telecom Government Inc. (https://www.klasgroup.com/government/) to develop OCI Roving Edge devices.
Benefit to Oracle
Oracle made these announcements to strengthen its position in the AI platform, AI services, cloud, and edge computing markets and to support customer demands for data privacy, sovereign AI, and low-latency requirements.
It also aims to empower customers with flexibility and choice in deploying cloud services, whether at the edge, in their own data centers, or across multiple cloud environments.
And last, the announcement of OCI Supercluster reinforces Oracle’s position with respect to providing enterprise-class infrastructure for AI research and development.
Implications for Oracle Customers
Oracle’s customers gain greater flexibility in deploying OCI services across various cloud platforms and on-premises environments, allowing for tailored solutions to meet specific needs.
Also, the OCI Supercluster is targeted to support complex AI workloads and accelerate innovation.
AI Platform Market
These enhancements bolster Oracle’s position in the competitive AI platform market against heavyweights like Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Amazon. However, most organizations do not view Oracle as a generalized AI platform but rather an AI platform for Oracle applications, services, and DBMS.
The OCI Supercluster and the focus on distributed cloud capabilities could entice organizations seeking high-performance AI infrastructure with flexible deployment options. However, it is early days with the supercluster, and the company will need to be able to demonstrate scalability, manageability, and reliability.
Bottom Line – CloudWorld 2024
Oracle’s CloudWorld 2024 announcement this week signifies a strategic move to expand its footprint in the distributed cloud and AI domains. They do not dramatically change the layout of the AI platform market or AI services. However, the enhancements to OCI present compelling opportunities for Oracle customers seeking flexible, scalable, and integrated solutions.
