Agentic Systems: The Future of Digital Labor

Agentic Systems: The Future of Digital Labor
Agentic systems represent a fundamental shift in how business and technology leaders must think about and support their technology-enabled business. This is a rapidly evolving area of research and development; we wanted to highlight this to help clients understand the market, business, people and technology changes.
Paradigm Shift: Beyond Individual AI Agents
Today, many organizations are already busy focusing on the impact of generative AI and individual AI agents designed for specific tasks.
However, the real game-changer lies in the next evolution of highly sophisticated agentic systems.
Agentic systems are comprised of multiple autonomous agents working in a coordinated fashion to achieve a common objective. While a critical differentiation of agentic systems is that it is comprised of multiple agents, this system will extend beyond just agent-to-agent interactions.
An agentic system will increasingly include and engage with other resources, including applications, humans, external websites, and a multitude of data sources – essentially, any resource necessary to achieve its goals.
Fundamental Leap
Agentic systems aren’t just about agents interoperating; the system is about ensuring flow of information and engagement between agents, humans, external applications, websites, and various data repositories, all managed and coordinated within the agentic system.
For example, we could see a retail agentic system that includes a greeter agent, and shopping agent and a checkout agent engaging with existing inventory systems, a human pricing manager and existing CRM data.
Focus on Systems/Solutions Architecture
Agentic systems require a system/solution architecture perspective that considers the interconnectivity, engagement, resource management, security, scalability and fault tolerance between resources: agents, people, core processes, information/data, applications, external websites, technology infrastructure, and your broader business ecosystem.
Preparing for Intelligent Digital Labor
We are just beginning to introduce the concept of agentic systems to our clients. However, clients need to understand and prepare for agentic systems now.
Look to your primary application and solutions providers. Track the development plans. They may or may not be using the term “agentic systems” but they will be increasingly supporting these muti-agent heterogeneous systems.
While widespread adoption may still be on the horizon, the underlying principles of coordination, collaboration, and holistic integration are already relevant. Developing a future-ready architecture that can accommodate the complexities of agentic systems will be a significant competitive advantage.
Bottom Line
The emergence of agentic systems represents a fundamental evolution in how organizations will leverage digital labor.
By adopting a technology-enabled business architecture perspective, organizations can position themselves to capitalize on the transformative opportunities of agentic systems and secure a competitive advantage.
