Google Steps into the Chat AI Ring with Bard, Anthropic Investment
Many have been looking to Google to respond as the tech community continues to reel from the impressive growth and capabilities displayed by OpenAI’s ChatGPT bot.
With many users reporting that they prefer ChatGPT to Google search, there has been lots of pressure on the search engine giant to respond. Bard
This blog considers two recent major announcements by Google that indicate it is stepping into the ring to compete with OpenAI.
Google Announces Its ChatGPT Alternative Bard
Google has just opened up its generative chat model, called Bard, for external testing, announcing that the system will be going into production for everyday users in the next coming months.
This newfound aggression for delivering AI products can certainly be traced to the competitive pressure induced by Microsoft and OpenAI. But will Google’s new chat model be able to stand up to what users have come to expect with ChatGPT?
Bard will make use of Google’s own advanced LaMDA language model. However, because this model has only been available for internal use within Google thus far, it is hard to say how its capabilities will compare with ChatGPT.
And yet, there is reason to believe Google may have an edge. After all, it was Google researchers who first identified the transformer neural network architecture that made advances like GPT-3 possible.
Google also has access to massive, scalable quantities of cloud compute, and has a highly robust search engine infrastructure. These factors may position it to deliver services more smoothly in a market where the rapid growth of the user base has presented a challenge to delivering reliable services.
Time will tell whether these factors are enough to give Google the leg up.
Doubling Down with Anthropic Investment
Beyond announcing its own chatbot, Google has also poured substantial investment into an emerging AI alignment startup, Anthropic AI.
With a $300M initial investment Google is betting on this small startup to deliver more conversational AI solutions powered by out-of-the-box thinking.
By following Microsoft’s lead and investing in a small research lab, Google is positioned to pilot product tests without officially committing to product offerings in the way it has with Bard.
Currently, Anthropic is working on a different chat model, Claude, which relies on a unique approach to large language models called ‘constitutional AI’ that tries to implement a more sophisticated decision-making framework for virtual agents.
Bottom Line
It is impossible to say just yet who will win this emerging AI arms race. But one thing is certain—the market is heating up, and Google is preparing to give Microsoft and OpenAI a run for their money.
