Apple just had its annual worldwide developer conference and there were lots of hints about the future of macOS and the future of Apple Silicon. To date, the only processor that has been released is the M1 for MacBooks and iMacs. However, you should realize that Apple has 14 years of ARM design under its belt. Given all the focus on its system for its chip designs, many new features in upcoming OS releases will take advantage of the new processors, leaving Intel machines with less capabilities. Aragon feels that all macs over the last four years still run very well. However, instead of using them for 4 years, Aragon is suggesting that you evaluate replacing them sooner to take better advantage of both the productivity and feature capabilities that will come in the new macOS releases this year and years to come.

M1—Why Is It Better?

The reason that the M1 processor is better than previous designs is twofold. Reason number one is that it has all the memory on the main processor board. This is known as ‘system on a chip,’ and it makes the machine much more efficient. This is the reason that there’s no sound in the new MacBook Pros.

Given the efficiency and the lack of heat, this also means that MacBook Pro is 130 to 40% longer-lasting than Intel-based machines. For executives on the go, the longer battery life is huge, particularly on a long plane flight where you can’t find an outlet to plug into.

There are other benefits associated with the processor that include edge computing, and with that advanced image processing as well as other features that Apple has not told us about yet.

The last thing that is the most impressive is that video plays very well well on these M1 processors. You can play many more videos for much longer with a minimal impact on battery life due to the design of the ARM architecture.

Bottom Line: M1 Is Just the Beginning

Apple is headed for a number of new designs, and rumor has it some should be available by Fall. We don’t know the exact specs of these upcoming machines but speed and performance is what they should deliver. Business leaders should keep their eyes peeled for this next rollout and ensure that they are keeping their enterprise infrastructure refreshed.
