ChatGPT and Conversational Search Are Just the Start of a Revolution in Enterprise Software
With the rise of ChatGPT and basically what has become a new interface to talk to computers we are describing that as conversational search. There are many implications for the change in how people interact with computers and conversational search is just the beginning.
Conversational AI Came Before Conversational Search
Aragon has been covering conversational AI for several years. The way that people interact with the chat bot is via conversations sometimes also referred to as natural language processing. early attempts using conversational AI were basic and often prompt based, leaving users less than enthused with the interaction. (See Aragon’s latest globe: The Aragon Research Globe™ for Conversational AI in the Intelligent Contact Center (ICC), 2023)
Why Conversational Search Now?
Conversational search is not new; Google has had this capability for several years. However, they limited the interaction with the Google search engine to one question. That question was “did you mean this?” and where it would then it would display the third search term it thought you wanted or what it was suggesting that you wanted.
With OpenAI’s ChatGPT, people immediately saw the potential And what we have witnessed is one of the fastest signups of users in the history of SaaS applications. The reason for this is that people like to talk and found that it was easy to not only talk to ChatGPT but also to get answers.
Generative Content is Here
Aragon Research wrote about generative content last year and that’s part of our overall coverage of content automation. One of the reasons for this success of ChatGPT is that it can generate answers to two questions very fast and generally with good to very good quality. (See our Note Research: What is Generative Content?).
However generative content is not without its issues because ChatGPT is not just getting answers and writing term papers and marketing slogans out of thin ice. It has sources for this information and even Aragon discovered that ChatGPT could find answers to some of the questions we posed by taking information off of Aragonresearch.com.
Last week I wrote a blog about the need for enterprises to take their time and productize commercial versions of conversational search and generative AI. One example is Microsoft Azure service with ChatGPT incorporated into it.
Bottom Line
The bottom line is that we’re really looking at a revolution in how people talk to computers and how computers respond with detailed answers.
The benefit to enterprises will be the rise of knowledge assistants, such as marketing assistants or legal assistants. The average business person now knows that AI is real and that in many cases they will need to change the product or service that they offer.
