SnapLogic’s Generative Integration
I had a very interesting briefing and demo today from SnapLogic. They started out the briefing by mentioning that they were working on some “generative integration” product enhancements and market positioning.
I will admit, when I first heard this, my analyst “baloney-o meter” turned on. You can’t take a turn in any direction without some vendor touting their AI capabilities, and specifically their Generative X capabilities.
However, as a long-time database and integration person, I found this pretty interesting.
SnapLogic’s SnapGPT
The first thing they showed me was the capability to interact with SnapGPT to ask a question about how to perform different tasks in SnapLogic. For example, “how do I create an integration that shows my top sales opportunities out of Salesforce in SnapLogic?” SnapGPT came back with a summary of how to create this integration.
I thought ok, but that is just giving me instructions on how to use SnapLogic.
Then they started to show how they could ask real questions and build integrations and patterns on the fly. This time they asked SnapGPT to “Build an integration that brings back my sales opportunities over $10,000 from Salesforce.” This time SnapGPT actually generated the integration pipelines that would bring back this information.
Then they asked SnapGPT to write a summary of this new integration pipeline. SnapGPT came back with a nice clear summary of the pattern, how it worked and how it was used; something you could edit a bit for documentation.
Think about it….how many times have people not documented their work? This helps to address this issue.
We played with a few more examples, like accessing data from Azure dataset, bringing data back in different formats and looking into unknown data stores.
Slated to Launch on July 26th, 2023
Right now, SnapGPT is in its final development stages with this additional capability after the company initially announced it in March 2023 and was referenced in our latest tPaaS report, The Aragon Research Globe™ for Transformation Platform as a Service (tPaaS), 2023. It is currently available to SnapLogic customers for preview in the SnapLabs pre-production environment and the company intends to make this generally available on July 26th at no additional charge.
SnapGPT is a good example of some of the real generative AI work that organizations are doing. There are a few comments and questions that I had, such as:
- Will organizations be able to have a private version of the SnapLogic engine so it learns their business specifically? The answer is not now. This is a limitation of OpenAIs licensing right now.
- Will they have industry focused segments of SnapGPT? Not now. Again, this is a licensing limitation of OpenAI.
The other thing to consider is the old “garbage in, garbage out” issue. If your data sources are not in good shape (e.g. data consistency and integrity issues); an AI generator is just going to bring back more bad data, faster and easier.
SnapLogic has offered to let me play with their generative integration capabilities. So, I should have more insights on this over time. But at first blush, this does look like the beginning of real generative integration.
Bottom Line
We have been saying for some time that generative AI is an area clients need to pay attention to. Generative AI will have an impact on your business and how people work.
It is not without its limitations and issues – technical, business, ethical, regulatory, etc. However, capabilities like SnapLogic’s SnapGPT are worth exploring how they might make your businesses able to access and integrate information more easily and effectively.
