OpenAI Delivers on APIs—Accelerating the Adoption of ChatGPT
On March 1st, OpenAI announced ChatGPT and Whisper APIs, delivering on a promise made a month ago when it first announced ChatGPT Plus, its $20 per month initial commercial offering.
Accessing ChatGPT Through API Calls
The ChatGPT API accesses OpenAI’s gpt-3.5-turbo language model, the same model used in its wildly popular ChatGPT product. This enables application developers to embed ChatGPT language capabilities into their own applications through API calls.
OpenAI is also providing API access to its Whisper speech-to-text (STT) algorithms so that spoken English can also be used as input to ChatGPT models. Whisper provides both transcription to English as well as translation to many popular languages.
How Much Does It Cost?
OpenAI is pricing API access to ChatGPT very attractive relative to its pricing for other models it offers.
For example, ChatGPT API is priced at $0.002 per 1,000 tokens (roughly 750 words) which is 10 times less expensive than API access to OpenAI’s Davinci gpt-3.5 model.
Accessing Whisper APIs is also attractively priced at $0.006 per minute of audio processed and can process many of the popular audio formats.
Early Adopters Jumping on the Bandwagon
There are several early adopters that have already begun to use ChatGPT language models within their commercial applications.
The popular eCommerce company Shopify has already incorporated ChatGPT API in its Shop app for AI powered search and product recommendation capabilities and grocery delivery company Instacart is incorporating ChatGPT APIs to provide its users with shopping recommendations.
Bottom Line
ChatGPT was only released a few short months ago and has already gained overwhelming popularity by its users. API access to the underlying language capabilities of ChatGPT will take the adoption of OpenAI’s technology to the next level through a wealth of new applications.
The rapid pace at which innovation is being delivered seems to affirm the marriage of OpenAI’s technological prowess with Microsoft’s ability to monetize and bring technology to the market.
