Natural language conversations are rapidly becoming the preferred method of interaction between humans and computers, but not all conversations are equal. Just as the “How’s it going?” we exchange in a casual conversation is substantively different from a deep discussion of politics, religion, or one’s medical condition, the range of inquiries handled or responses provided from modern systems is equally broad. In this note we outline a framework for comparing the depth of an AI-powered conversational interface according to its function in a specific application and discuss significant trends.
